What Is Oral Biofilm?

Biofilm is a living, organized community of bacteria that naturally forms on teeth, gums, and oral tissues. Unlike loose plaque, biofilm protects bacteria and allows them to communicate and persist. When balanced, biofilm can coexist with health. When overactive, it contributes to cavities, gum disease, and chronic inflammation.

Why Biofilm Matters

An overactive biofilm increases:

  • Inflammation in the mouth
  • Risk of cavities and gum disease
  • Stress on oral tissues

Because the mouth is closely connected to the rest of the body, chronic oral inflammation may also influence overall health, including factors related to breathing, sleep quality, and systemic inflammation.

How We Measure Biofilm

We use ATP biofilm testing (CariScreen) to objectively measure bacterial activity. This test provides a numeric score rather than relying only on what we can see during an exam.

Think of it like checking blood pressure or blood sugar—it gives us data so we’re not guessing.

What the Numbers Mean

ATP scores range from 0–9999.

  • Our target is ≤1499
  • Scores above this indicate increasing biofilm activity and imbalance

The goal is not perfection, but getting below 1499 and maintaining stability over time.

Why Biofilm Testing Is Part of Routine Care

We consider biofilm testing a standard part of preventive care, not an optional add-on. Measuring biofilm allows us to:

  • Identify risk earlier
  • Personalize care
  • Track improvement over time
  • Prevent problems before they require more invasive treatment

This is why the test is now offered at a reduced fee, making it accessible for all patients.

How We Help Improve Elevated Scores

If your score is above the target range, we may recommend a customized Biofilm Reduction Take-Home Kit matched to your score and individual needs.

These protocols are designed to change the bacterial environment, not simply remove surface plaque.

Participation is optional, but recommended for patients who want active support in lowering their score.

Why Follow-Up Testing Matters

Biofilm is dynamic and changes over time. Follow-up testing allows us to:

  • Confirm improvement
  • Adjust recommendations if needed
  • Ensure long-term stability once the target range is reached

Follow-up intervals are based on your score—not opinion.

Our Philosophy

We believe in measuring what matters, preventing disease early, and supporting long-term health—starting with the mouth.
