The 30-Second Nasal Breathing Check Everyone Should Try
Most people never stop to think about how they breathe. Yet breathing is something we do more than 20,000 times every day. A simple nasal breathing check can provide valuable insight into your airway health.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Can you comfortably keep your lips together throughout the day?
- Do you breathe through your nose while resting?
- Do you wake up with a dry mouth?
- Do you snore?
- Do you frequently feel congested?
If you answered “no” to the first question or “yes” to several of the others, your airway may deserve closer attention.
Nasal breathing offers many benefits, including:
- Filtering incoming air
- Warming and humidifying air
- Supporting nitric oxide production
- Promoting healthier breathing patterns
Many adults and children develop mouth-breathing habits without realizing it. Over time, these habits may contribute to sleep disturbances, fatigue, dry mouth, bad breath, and even changes in facial development.
The good news is that identifying a problem is the first step toward improvement.
Sometimes the solution is surprisingly simple. Other times, additional evaluation may be needed to uncover the underlying cause.
